In 2009, the UK's largest out-of-hours emergency care service for pets, Vets Now. won the top title at Scottish Business Insider’s SME300 awards.
The judges described founder Richard Dixon, who also collected the Business Leadership Award, as a classic example of an entrepreneur who had turned his vision for a business into reality.
The awards held in association with professional services firm Scott-Moncrieff aim to recognise the achievements of Scottish SME companies in a number of different areas including leadership, innovation and focus.
They are open only to members of the Insider SME300 list of the best performing SMEs in Scotland published our July/August edition..
Winner of the Most Focused SME and Fastest Growing SME titles was Edinburgh publishing house Canongate Books which has become an award winning international business since being rescued from receivership in 1994.
The Best Medium Sized SME and Best Employer awards went to Prosource IT of Aberdeen which now employs 200 staff across Scotland, London, Houston and Calgary providing support and project services to companies in sectors including oil & gas, transport and manufacturing.
The Best Small Sized SME award went to Balhousie Holdings which operates 20 homes for elderly adults and those with mental health difficulties and is now the largest independent provider of residential care in Scotland.
The Best Newcomer award went to fund manager Edinburgh Partners which was founded six years ago and is now one of Scotland’s most respected boutique investment houses.
At the awards ceremony Donald Forsyth, head of the business advisory group for Scott-Moncrieff, said it was a difficult climate for SMEs but that the new decade presented opportunities.
“The skills and decision making of business leaders will continue to be tested to a significant degree for the foreseeable future,” he told the audience at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow.
He said SMEs were often better placed than larger businesses to respond nimbly. “Indeed, successful SMEs can teach many larger organisations how to tackle challenges and change effectively and all the candidates at these awards are worthy of our respect for their performance over the last year.
Details are still being finalised about the date and venue for this year’s awards. We will be inviting entries for the awards in July when the SME300 is published.
